Hikemaster Scott loves Wild Basin. The trails are remote, the peaks austere, and the lakes as pretty as any. Any day in Wild Basin is a good day :-)

The trail down to Calypso Cascades gradually descends through new trees growing up in the burn area of the park. It's absolutely stunning to see the scenery and new growth around here.

Tamina Peak is fairly distinctive in the left-center (to the northwest). The dead trees continue for quite a distance.

Copeland Falls marks the last 0.3 miles of the hike back to the Wild Basin Trailhead. Mareike and Hikemaster Scott would have to walk the 0.3 mile dirt road back to the car....it was good to get the boots off after a long day!

The Finch Lake trail meanders directly through an area of the burn (1978 Ouzel Fire). Young lodgepoles are trying to regrow here, and the trail through this region reveals great views in all directions.

Outlet stream of Pear Lake. There is yet another campsite in this area, which is full of green vegetation and abundant moisture. The mosquitoes were kept mostly away by cool breezes through the afternoon.

Huge tree stump uproots right next to the Pear Lake. Conifer trees have very shallow roots, making them vulnerable to toppling over in the wind, despite their large size.

Lots of campsites are available near Pear Lake. Hikemaster Scott and Mareike saw a rather large group of backpackers heading this way on their return trip down.

The shoreline of Pear Lake consists of many level, small rocks. Easy to walk around. Pear Lake used to be a dammed reservoir, and perhaps you can see the resemblence with other lakes like Lawn Lake.

Mareike hikes towards Pear Lake thorugh a mature forest of evergreens. The trees were extremely fragrant, and she loved the isolation and remoteness of this stretch of trail.

About 1/2 way from Finch to Pear, this unexpected lily-pad covered pond appeared through the trees next to the trail. Some blooms were starting on the pond. Anyone know the name of this quiet body of water? It was very peaceful :-)

Hikemaster Scott cannot remember the trail to Pear Lake. He hiked it in total darkness with Hikemasters Billy and Tony on August 10, 2008 on a 20-mile Ogallala Peak hike. But it was great to see it in the light of day this day.

Pear Lake sits beneath Copeland Mountain. To climb this peak, it is much easier to climb from the other side (Ouzel Lake approach) to avoid the cliffs seen here.

It was sunny and warm at Finch Lake on this, the first day of July in RMNP. Mareike enjoys a little respite on the rocks next to Finch Lake. She really enjoyed this, her longest hike on her visit to RMNP :-)
